Interviews, My Guests

Interview With J.L. Sheppard, Author of Demon King’s Desire

Paranormal Romance, RomanceI’m delighted to have author J.L. Sheppard as my guest today.

Hi, J.L., welcome!Tell us a little about your paranormal romance, Demon King’s Desire, the first book in your Elemental Sisters series. What inspired this story?

I always wanted to write a book. It was a lifelong dream of mine. I got an idea to write a series about sisters with the ability to control the four classical elements: earth, fire, wind and water and whose powers develop when they met their mates. From that small idea, I started writing.

Blurb:

When Jenna Jenson is attacked by a man whose supernatural abilities supersede her super hearing, strength and abnormal reflexes, she is rescued by the demon king, Lucas Thaler and powers she never knew she possessed are revealed. She discovers she is part of a new breed of immortals prophesied to evolve that could either save or destroy human life.

After a war in his demon plane and home that killed his entire family, Lucas has dedicated his life to combating Malum Inmortalis, whose goal is to rule immortals and mankind. The evil he has battled for centuries and his purpose is deferred when he hears Jenna’s voice, the woman he has been waiting for centuries, the woman he’s been dreaming of for centuries, his fated mate.

What are you working on now? Do you have any releases scheduled for this year?

The second book to the Elemental Sisters series, Burdened by Desire, is in the copy editing process with The Wild Rose Press. I’m working on a spin off to this series.

What are your writing goals for this year?

I’d love to get the third book of the Elemental Sisters series contracted as well as the first book of the spin off series.

How do you come up with ideas?

Ideas come to me at the oddest hours: right before I go to bed, in the early hours of the morning or in dreams.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

I enjoy creating love stories, and I love creating characters readers can related to.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, character, or…?

I start with ideas, usually it’s a scene and dialogue that comes to mind. I make sure to jot it down immediately, and I go from there.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

My couch… where I do most of my writing.

What do you like to read?

I love reading romance, including paranormal romance books. Some of my favorites include The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost, Argeneau Vampires by Lynsay Sands, Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole.

Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

I’ve always loved reading. I didn’t start reading romance avidly until after college, and that’s primarily because I didn’t have the time. The books I read during college were textbooks. LOL.

Who influenced your decision to become a writer?

I share the love of reading with one of my sisters. She greatly influenced me and encouraged me to continue to write; however, without the love and support of my husband, I would have probably given up.

These are few of my favorite things:

1. Reading

2. Writing

3. Spending quality time with family and friends

And J.L. has a question for you all: What’s your favorite paranormal romance book?

Excerpt:

“Come in,” she said after he knocked on her door.

He slowly opened the door and found her sitting on the bed with a towel wrapped around her. He instinctively turned around dropping the bag with Jenna’s new clothes on the floor. He closed his eyes hoping to wipe away the memory of her in her towel, but he couldn’t. She looked so mouthwatering with her silky smooth skin.

Oh God, he thought. “I’m sorry, I thought I heard you say to come in.”

“I did.”

“But you’re only wearing a towel.”

“What is it with you guys and towels? It’s not like I’m naked.”

“No, you aren’t,” he said, still turned away from her. “But, Jenna, you do realize the effect you have on men, don’t you?”

“Excuse me,” she said. He could hear her walking toward him.

“Lucas,” she said. “Turn around.” He did as she asked. “Now look at me, Lucas.”

Again, he did. He stared into her eyes and admired the dark brown hue as he ran his hand over the side of her face, feeling its lovely softness. Jenna was all beauty, he thought. She deserved better than him, a monster, a demon.

“You are so beautiful, Jenna. Any man in this world would give up his life to touch you once, just like this,” he said as he continued to caress her cheek.

She gasped. “I can feel it. I never noticed it before, but I can feel it now.”

“What, Jenna,” he asked. “What can you feel?” She could feel what he did because when he was around her, it was hard to keep his emotions in check and hide from her how he truly felt.

“What you’re feeling… I think it’s awe.”

He leaned down and took her lips in a passionate kiss. As with the other times, he couldn’t help himself. He kissed her, and with equal passion and anticipation, she kissed him, their tongues entwined in a battle of desire.

One question you’d like commenters to answer (If you ask a question at the end of your blog it makes it much easier for people to think of a comment. Sometimes they want to let you know they came by but they can’t think of anything to say. A simple question can get conversations moving.):

Paranormal Romance, RomanceBio: J.L. Sheppard was born and raised in Miami, Florida, where she still lives with her husband. Her lifelong dream was to write a book, but it wasn’t until 2011 that she set her heart and mind into writing her first completed novel, Demon King’s Desire, which was published in January of 2013. 1. Congratulations on Demon King’s Desire, and the contract for your second book, J.L. We seem to have a lot in common . . . I recently finished the last book in my 4-book supernatural-thriller series (which I am seeking rep for), my protagonist is also immortal, and I am working on spin offs. Oh, and we both live in Florida. lol Your books have a different slant to them though (demons!), and because of that I am very intrigued. I love paranormal romances! I can’t pick a favorite as there are too many, but I definitely will be adding your book(s) to my must-read list! 🙂

    Thanks for sharing, Babette!

I love comments!
