Writing Prompt – She’s With Him??!

In our hearts, our character couples are always perfect for each other, but then there are those couples who, despite the given of a Happily Ever After (it is a Romance, after all) seem so impossibly mismatched ,  the determined attraction they have for one another is a surprise. This is wonderful grist for drama, suspense and most certainly comedy.

Writing Prompt: Write a 250+ word scene from any character’s viewpoint giving insight into the hero’s and heroine’s apparent mismatch. This could be a negative opinion, or a epiphany of the connection between them. This could add a light moment to a dark story, or further jeopardize their success.

Who are your favorite romantic mismatches?

Writing Prompt – In Her Eyes I Am

25 Mar

She stares through my shadow
She sees something more
Believes there’s a light in me
She is sure

Josh Groban, In Her Eyes

No sooner met, but they looked; no sooner looked but they loved . . .
Shakespeare, As You Like It, V, ii, 37

And love comes in at the eye . . .
William Butler Yeats, The Green Helmet and Other Poems [1910]. A Drinking Song

Eye to eye. Step two into intimacy. The first look of heroine and hero into one another’s eyes–That initial glance may not always be love at first sight, it may not even be consciously acknowledged, but it remains a moment of emotional impact for the characters.

With some of our darker, troubled heroes, this can be a daunting moment for the heroine. Suddenly, this man’s no longer wholly a threat, a stranger or even simply an acquaintance, but someone she will grow to trust with her heart and life, and everything that she is. She sees something in him that lets her make that next step closer in the relationship possible.

Writing Prompt: Write a scene from the heroine’s viewpoint, where she sees the hero’s eyes for the first time. Go beyond simple physical description. Think of her feelings as she looks into her man’s eyes and sees something new, something more.

Writing prompt for today:

The hero–or is he? Today, this knight is your hero (or anti-hero). What is he thinking?
