As Nate and Kay struggle with their relationship in Clear As Day, other characters are dealing with their own issues and the weather’s not the only thing heating up. Here’s six from another favorite secondary character moment as Kay watches a simple concerned inquiry send sparks flying:

Olivia crossed her arms and slowly raised her chin to give him a surprisingly firm don’t-mess-with-me stare with those soft brown eyes.
Dave glared back at her, his eyes gone hard as topaz. “Well, don’t bother.”
“I won’t.” She heaved an exasperated sigh and set her book aside. “Mercy and a half, carry a little attitude around, do you?”

Friends play an important part in Clear As Day. In today’s six, I’m sharing another favorite secondary character moment:

“All right! Who’s ready to cut some water? Kay, want first go?” Dave shucked off his faded T-shirt that declared Firefighters Do It Hot and Wet. His tough, rangy body still hadn’t an ounce of spare flesh.

“Oh, be still my heart.” JoAnn grinned and fanned herself.

Dave’s laughter cracked out, and he tossed her the shirt.

JoAnn fake-swooned into a chair, clutching the shirt to her, and doubled up laughing.

In today’s six, in honor of Mother’s Day, here’s a moment with two more of Nate and Kay’s oldest friends from Clear As Day who are looking forward to finally celebrating their first Mother’s Day:

Lloyd danced with JoAnn to Coltrane and Hartman’s “My One and Only Love,” with the look in their eyes between them the same as when they’d danced to that song at their wedding reception seven years ago. The song ended and they stayed in their embrace, oblivious to the change in tune and tempo. Lloyd caressed JoAnn with his big, rawboned carpenter’s hands, whispering into her ear, and JoAnn’s face radiated utter bliss. They laughed quietly together and kissed. JoAnn caught his scruffy face in her hands. “I love you.”
